How Broadband Set the Pace for Sustainable Tech in Africa: A Look Back at 2021
Take a look at how we’re driving sustainable impact across East & Central Africa. From reducing carbon emissions through hybrid power solutions to upholding the highest standards in human rights, labor practices, and ethical governance, our 2021 Sustainability Report reflects Broadband Communication Networks' commitment to responsible innovation, inclusive growth, and a greener digital future.

Building a Sustainable Digital Future in Africa: Inside Our 2021 Report

At Broadband Communication Networks, sustainability is more than a checkbox; it’s the framework through which we innovate, grow, and serve. That’s why we believe it’s still important to reflect on past milestones as we build forward.

In our Sustainability Report, we captured the progress, challenges, and impact of our journey across East and Central Africa, with a clear focus on ethics, environment, and equitable growth.

Green Innovation in Action

Our commitment to a cleaner future shows up in practical ways. In 2021 alone, we:

  • Reduced diesel use by 70% at select sites through hybrid energy systems.

  • Saved over 1,000 liters of diesel monthly at select off-grid sites.

  • Distributed nearly 3,000 LED bulbs, reducing carbon footprints across clients

  • Planted over 4,300 trees, with a long-term goal of 10,000+ per year

These aren’t just numbers. They represent lower emissions, reduced operating costs for clients, and more sustainable infrastructure in underserved communities.

Human-Centered Policies That Still Resonate Today

Sustainability starts from within. From enforcing strict health, safety, and labor standards to increasing female representation, we’ve taken meaningful steps to:

  • Provide equitable wages well above the national baseline

  • Ensure employee safety with certified HSE training across all roles and PPE for field teams

  • Roll out inclusive workplace benefits including lactation rooms and maternity cover

Infrastructure That Connects Communities

Between 2017 and 2021, we rolled out 238 mobile network sites, helping bridge the digital divide across Kenya’s rural regions. These sites have:

  • Connected farmers to mobile banking and online markets

  • Enabled digital payments like M-Pesa in remote areas

  • Contributed to stronger economic resilience in hard-to-reach communities

Zero Tolerance for Corruption

Operating in complex environments doesn’t mean compromising our values. With Kenya ranking 128th globally in Transparency International’s 2021 Corruption Perceptions Index, we:

  • Maintain a zero-tolerance corruption policy

  • Require all staff to sign our Code of Conduct

  • Encourage supplier registration under the UN Global Compact
